A vehicle suspension includes a movable load arm 16 to support a vehicle axle 22, at least one elliptical cross-section rod spring 32 carried by the load arm in load bearing relation with a vehicle body 20, a frictional damping surface 38 connected to the body adjacent the load arm 16, a frictional damping element 36, and a tapered operator 14 carried by the load arm 16 in underlying relation with each rod spring 32 such that one component of a load bearing force transmitted from the load arm 16 is applied to the rod spring 32 as a transverse load bearing compressive force only, while a perpendicular component thereof is applied to and urges the damping element 36 towards the friction surface 38. The suspension is suited for railcar and rubber tyred vehicles.
