PROCESS FOR RECOVERING USEFUL PRODUCTS FROM CARBOHYDRATE-CONTAINING MATERIALS

Carbohydrate containing products, especially molasses, are treated to recover the carbohydrate fraction therefrom as well as a number of additional products in a readily usable form without a significant amount of waste material. Exemplary products derivable from molasses are solutions of fructose, for use as fertilizer; and a product useful for a ruminant feedstuff. The treatment process typically involves contact of the carbohydrate-containing material with an ion-exclusion resin in which carbohydrate and salts are separated, preferably non-carbohydrate materials. Carbohydrate-containing products treated in accordance with the present process include fruit juices, whey and starch hydrolysates.
