A measuring chamber receives the liquid temporarily and has an upper inflow opening and a lower outflow opening. The lower outflow opening is shut off as required. The measuring chamber (9) has inside it a sensor which responds to the head of liquid and generates an alarm signal. This signal can trigger a regulating or control operation, a counting or recording operation or the opening or closing of a valve shutting off the outflow opening of the measuring chamber. The sensor can be a diaphragm pressure switch or limit switch reacting to the hydrostatic pressure of the head of liquid in the chamber.
