Polymers of monomers of the formula R-CH=CH2, where R is an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms are made by polymerizing the monomers in the presence of a catalyst comprising (1) a compound of a metal of Group IV, V, VI, or VIII, of the Periodic System, (2) an organometallic compound, metal hydride, or metal of Group I, II or III, and (3) an aromatic ether represented by the formula <FORM:0992739/C3/1> where n=0 to 5, x=1 to 3, R=hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, or alkaryl, and at least one R must be other than hydrogen when n=0. Specified olefins are propylene, 1-butene, 1-pentene, and 4-methyl-1-pentene. The catalyst may also include a further component selected from organic halides, metal halides, halogens, hydrogen halides, peroxides, and organophosphorus-containing compounds. The polymerization may be effected continuously, or batchwise, and in bulk, or in the presence of a hydrocarbon diluent. The Specification contains an extensive list of catalyst components of which is exemplified a titanium trichloride complex (3TiCl3.AlCl3), and diethylaluminium chloride, admixed with 4-biphenyl phenyl ether, or bis-(m phenoxyphenyl)ether, or m-bis-(m-phenoxy-phenoxy)benzene. The polymers have a very low amorphous content, preferably below 4% of "pentane solubles." |
