Process for producing porous ceramic bodies containing monocrystalline alpha-alumina platelets

Prepn. of porous ceramic parts comprises (a) shaping a compsn. contg. single crystal alpha alumina platelets, organic additive(s) and opt. mineral additive (pref. glass, aluminium phosphate, spinel or mullite powder or alumina, silica or zirconia gel); (b) opt. heating the resulting article to eliminate the organic additive(s); (c) firing the article to obtain a porous part; and (d) opt. treating the part with a consolidating agent (pref. phosphoric acid or mineral salt of Mg, Ca or Na) and heating.
