Carbon fibres are embedded in the graphite components as reinforcement material. Sections of graphite material reinforced in this way to be used as pointed ends of control or switching rods for nuclear reactors. Similarly the graphite coating or shells of spherical fuel elements may be made of similarly reinforced graphite.
