PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new gene that codes for α-hydroxy-γ-carboxymuconic acid-ε-semialdehyde dehydrogenase containing a specific amino acid sequence and gives this enzyme for producing 2-pyrone-4,6-dicarboxylic acid. SOLUTION: This gene is a new gene, which has the amino acid sequence represented by formula I or II or the amino acid sequence in which one or more than two amino acids are deleted, substituted or added to these amino acid sequences and codes for polypeptides having α-hydroxy-γ-carboxymuconic acid-ε-semialdehyde dehydrogenase activity, and is used in the production or the like of this enzyme useful for producing 2-pyrone-4,6-dicarboxylic acid from α-hydroxyl-γ-carboxymuconic acid-ε-semialdehyde. This gene is obtained by extracting a genome DNA from Sphingomonas sp. CR-0310201 strain, preparing a gene library by the use of this DNA and then screening the library with a probe containing its partial sequence.
