PURPOSE:To obtain a new phenylethane derivative useful as a developer capable of improving the preservation stability of a colored image in a recording material. CONSTITUTION:This phenylethane derivative of the formula [R<1> is H or a 1-5C alkyl; R<2> is OH or a 1-5C alkyl having OH; R<3> is H, a 1-5C alkyl or phenyl; (n) is 0-2], e.g. 2-(4-hydroxyphenylthlo)-2-phenylethanol. The compound of formula I, e.g. its sulfide derivative is obtained by reacting styrene oxides or alpha- halogenophenylalkyl alcohols with 4-mercaptophenols. The compound of the formula is capable of improving light fastness in an uncolored and a colored parts. For example, an extremely stable heat-sensitive recording material such as the uncolored part maintaining the whiteness degree and the colored part hardly disappearing even when exposed to, e.g. the sunlight is obtained. |
