The present invention provides novel 1,4-diaryl-2-fluoro-1-buten-3-ol compounds of the structural formula Ia method for the preparation of those formula I compounds, and the use of those formula I compounds in the preparation of 1,4-diaryl-2-fluoro-1,3-butadiene compounds of formula II and 1,4-diaryl-2-fluoro-2-butene compounds of formula III
