Process for the modification of solid surfaces comprises a living/controlled radical polymerization initiated by compounds bound to the solid surface. A process for performing a living/controlled radical polymerization comprises controlled growth of defined oligomeric or polymeric layers or layer systems on the surfaces of a solid body which are chemically bonded to the surface whereby: (A) functional groups of primary valence are bound to the surface of the solid body to initiate polymerization; (B) carrying out a living/controlled radical polymerization of monomers and/or macromonomers in a second step; (C) further living/controlled radical polymerization to form a second and/or further polymer layers of different monomers and/or macromonomer species; (D) modification of the polymer layers following steps (B) or (C) by means of appropriate reactants to chemically convert oligomeric and/or polymeric functional groups with retention of the degree of polymerization; and (E) the resulting solid-polymer layer system may be bound into a three dimensional polymer matrix by cross-linking reactions.
