PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a picture data communicating method for highly efficiently compressing and encoding picture data even it is a half-tone picture and the picture of an original with a photograph from the middle of a line. SOLUTION: At the time of transmission, MPU 1 divides the picture of one page, which a scanner 2 reads, into the two directions of vertical/lateral directions. Picture data on the divided areas are encoded by the encoding system of MR, MMR and JBIG with which the encoding data quantity of the respective areas becomes the smallest. Picture data is transmitted with information showing the encoding system as picture data for plural pages, where the respective areas are set to be one page. At the time of reception, MPU 1 decodes the respective pages of picture data on the plural pages by a decoding system corresponding to the original encoding system. Decoding picture data is stuck to an image buffer 13 and the original picture of one page is restored.
