Disclosed is a surface-coated cutting tool comprising a base and a coating film formed on the base. The coating film contains a first coating layer made of a titanium boronitride or a titanium oxyboronitride, and a second coating layer made of at least one material selected from the group consisting of aluminum oxides, zirconium oxides, hafnium oxides and solid solutions mainly containing two or more of those oxides. This surface-coated cutting tool is characterized in that the first coating layer is arranged directly below the second coating layer between the base and the second coating layer, and the second coating layer has a compression stress in at least a portion which is involved in cutting.
