PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lifting apparatus for linearly moving a handling means. SOLUTION: In this lifting apparatus, a lifting beam 8 is suspended by a guide rail 7 extending in parallel with the lifting beam, and the lifting beam can be vertically slid by a driving means so as to freely travel in a carriage 5. Two parallel vertical stringers 1 are provided. The vertical stringers 1 are laterally united to each other through at least one uniting element while keeping bending stiffness, and can be fixed on a stationary or traveling supporting device. The carriage 5 is disposed in a space between the vertical stringers 1, and fixed to the uniting element. Vertical grooves that can be gripped by a block 4 with a groove from behind are formed on the lifting beam 8 and both vertical stringers 1. In this way, the uniting element, the driving means, and the supporting device are fixed to the vertical stringers 1, and the guide rail 7 is fixed to the lifting beam 8.
