The invention provides an engine with a high thermal efficiency which operates with auxiliary rotary piston pumps in order to ensure that for ignition sufficiently pressurised fuel/air mixture is forced into the interspaces of the rotary element in order to produce high-pressure expansion gases, which are guided symmetrically at least through one pair of obliquely extending longitudinal channels of appropriate cross-section in such a way that they cause sealed vanes of the rotary element to rotate and produce maximum power. Cooling water jackets are used as steam boilers in order to convert heat stemming from the cooling process into steam and pass it through a non-return valve into the longitudinal channels in order to increase engine power. Exhaust gases are used to drive a centrifugal pump in order to perform the first stage of fuel/air compression. Approximately 2 DIVIDED 3 of the heat energy is converted into work. The structure is simple but performs complex functions. Suitable fuels are petrol and diesel. The rotary piston engine according to the invention has a smooth torque characteristic and can be used to replace the renowned Wankel engine. <IMAGE>
