A hydrodynamic torque convertter has a rotating shell housing, a radial flow pump impeller, a centripetal guide ane and turbine wheel. A relatively large open chamber is located between the guide vane and impeller, giving a large initial flow whirl. A contoured section (7) is located on a section of the outer chamber wall as far as the guide vane wheel (3), matching the front face of the pump impeller hub (1). Radial boreholes (8) in the contoured section channel the flow, such that the hub and contour form a ring channel (9) connected to the boreholes and circulation path. ADVANTAGE - Method of loading a torque converter requiring relatively low pump pressure.
