The nozzles 18-19 delivering strips of adhesive to the parts of the box, which is to be closed, are associated with a slide 16 which slides on a straight horizontal guide 12 fixed to the frame of the packaging machine and orientated obliquely to the path of the boxes. The slide is hinged to a connecting rod 21 which is in turn hinged to the other end of a handle 25 which is keyed to a vertical shaft 27 which is driven in oscillating motion, in phase with the advance of the boxes in the packaging machine and at a speed such that the said pair of adhesive delivery nozzles cyclically carries out an oblique movement above or beneath the box which has to be closed, at a speed such as to follow the box as it advances and at the same time such that they move transversely over the said box, in order to distribute the said transverse strips of adhesive 10-11 over it. After the active working stroke, the nozzles are returned to the cycle start position so that they can then act in phase with a subsequent box which requires sealing, while appropriate means provide for opening and closing the said nozzles in phase with the said movement.
