[Class 106 (i)] [Also in Groups XXXVI and XVIII] Electric, gas or other metering mechanism includes an automatic device for changing rate and a readily detachable gear-change unit upon which the automatic device takes effect. The gear-change unit when detached may be replaced by another-unit giving a different set of rate changes. The mechanism is especially intended for use in prepayment electricity meters and is described in connection therewith. In one form the meter counter drives a spindle 21 transmitting through a gear train, which includes a detachable unit 44, 45, 46 mounted on a plate 47, to the credit register of the prepayment mechanism. The automatic change-rate device disengages a lever 35 from the teeth of a bevel-wheel 33 and thus uncouples a pinion 31 which brings into effect the indirect transmission through the gear-unit. The automatic device is responsive to the electrical load and is of electromagnetic nature.
