A method for producing a composite component 10, comprising (i) providing a first component 11 comprising a plastic layer 21 and positively connecting thereto at least one metallic connecting element 24, (ii) providing a second component 15, which is at least partly made of metal, and bringing that against the first component so that the at least one metallic connecting element comes in contact with a metallic part of the second component, and (iii) conducting electrical resistance welding 33 of the at least one metallic connecting element to the second component. Preferably the first component is a sandwich sheet 22 consisting of a plastic core layer 21 of polyethylene or polyamide placed between two metal outer sheets 19, 20 of steel or aluminium and the second component is made entirely of metal 42, such as steel and aluminium. Multiple connecting elements may be used, preferably rivets 27 with head 28 and shank 29, which are either punched directly through the first component or driven through bores drilled therethrough. The welding electrodes preferably exert a compressive force along the rivet axis, causing it to expand radially. The composite components produced are preferably used in the manufacture of motor vehicle bodies. |
