A soft-magnetic alloy for use in a perpendicular magnetic recording medium. Said alloy comprises one or more elements selected from among titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, nickel, copper, aluminum, boron, carbon, silicon, phosphorus, zinc, gallium, germanium, and tin, with the remainder comprising cobalt, iron, and unavoidable impurities. The atomic percentages of the constituent elements satisfy each of the following relations: (1) 0 <= Fe% / (Fe%+Co%) <= 0.5, (2) 5 <= Ti% + Zr% + Hf% + V% + Nb% + Ta% + B%/2, and (3) 0.3 <= 0.813xFe%/(Fe%+Co%) - 0.062xTNM + 1.751 <= 1.2 (TNM represents half of the atomic percentage of boron plus the sum of the atomic percentages of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, nickel, copper, aluminum, carbon, silicon, phosphorus, zinc, gallium, germanium, and tin). This alloy has a low saturation flux density at room temperature, and the decrease in said saturation flux density at high temperatures is low. |
