763,178. Gravity-separation apparatus. ABBOTT LABORATORIES. Sept. 14. 1953, No. 36688/55. Divided out of 763,177 [Group VI]. Class 46. [Also in Group VI] A flexible, collapsible container 10, made for example of polythene, is employed for the storage of blood for transfusion purposes. It is provided with self-sealing adapters 13 so that the blood can be introduced and withdrawn by hypodermic needles (see Group VI). When it is desired to separate the blood cells from the plasma the filled bag is hung up until the cells have settled at the bottom. A sealing clip 25 is then fastened on the bag at the line of separation to divide it into two distinct chambers and the plasma is withdrawn through the appropriate adapter 13. When the blood cells are to be used first, the bag is suspended with the adapters at the bottom so that the cells are adjacent to them ready for withdrawal. Instead of using a clamp 25 the bag may be heat sealed at the line of separation. |
