<p>Lignocellulose pulp is cyanoethylated by mixing approximately 100 parts by weight (dry basis) of pulp with 200 parts of water and 5 to 25 parts of an alkali-metal hydroxide, until the pulp is thoroughly wetted, adding 15-30 parts of acrylonitrile, mixing for approximately two hours at a temperature not above 25 DEG C. and stopping the reaction by dilution with water. Since the reaction is exothermic, cooling is necessary. Part of the water may be supplied as ice for this purpose. The pulp obtained may be washed with water, neutralized by, e.g. acetic acid, and again washed. The pulp treated may be, e.g. a kraft or rope pulp. Specifications 660,010 and 922,909 are referred to.ALSO:Paper and board are made from lignocellulose pulp cyanoethylated by mixing approximately 100 parts by weight (dry basis) of pulp with 200 parts of water and 5 to 25 parts of an alkali-metal hydroxide, until the pulp is thoroughly wetted, adding 15-30 parts of acrylonitrile, mixing for approximately two hours at a temperature not above 25 DEG C. and stopping the reaction by dilution with water.
