A dressing comprising first and second electrodes 18, an electrical power supply 14, and a physiologically or antimicrobially active precursor substance, whereby the electrochemical oxidation or reduction of the precursor substance on one of the electrodes produces a physiologically active substance which is capable of diffusing towards the skin site for the treatment thereof is carried out. The dressing is operable for a first treatment period and subsequently for a first rest period, wherein a subsequent treatment periods followed by rest periods are carried out over time. The precursor substrate may be contained in a hydrogel in which the electrodes are embedded, and may be chloride ions, iodide ions or sulphate ions which are oxidised at the anode to produce hypochlorous acid, iodine and peroxodisulphate respectively, the latter being an unstable intermediate which decomposes to hydrogen peroxide. |
