1. A method for discriminating between tumor tissue and non-tumor tissue in a subject in real-time, comprising:
administering to the subject a tumor marker, the tumor marker being specific for tumor tissue; contacting tissue with a cautery to generate a cautery smoke; and analyzing the cautery smoke in real-time to detect the presence or absence of the tumor marker in the tissue contacted by the cautery; wherein:
the presence of the tumor marker in the cautery smoke indicates contact of the cautery with tumor tissue, and the absence of the tumor marker in cautery smoke indicates contact of the cautery with non-tumor tissue.
