In a fuel cell in which the electrolyte is diluted by water produced in the cell reaction, the consequent rise in the level of the electrolyte in the container brings the diluted electrolyte into contact with an electrolyte concentrate which increases the concentration of the electrolyte. As shown in Fig. 1, the fuel battery 1 is immersed in aq. KOH in the container 12. Solid KOH in tray 20 reconcentrates the electrolyte when it is sufficiently dilute for the tray to be submerged. Alternatively, the bottom of the tray may be perforated and/or more than one tray at different heights may be provided. In other embodiments blocks or sticks of solid KOH may be suspended by their upper ends above the electrolyte or (Fig. 2, not shown), the concentrate is separated from the electrolyte by a weir. Several weirs of different heights may be used. The batteries may be used to operate flashing light beacons or buoys. |
