A process for continuous hydroformylation, in which an olefin starting material comprising at least one olefin having from 3 to 20 carbon atoms is reacted at elevated temperature and superatmospheric pressure with synthesis gas in the presence of a homogeneous transition metal catalyst complexed with an organophosphorus ligand and free ligand in a reaction zone, where the catalyst is formed in situ in the reaction zone and a solution of a transition metal source is introduced into the reaction zone to compensate catalyst losses, wherein the space-time yield of hydroformylation product in the reaction zone is determined and the rate of introduction of the transition metal source into the reaction zone is controlled as a function of the space-time yield.
