[Class 51 (ii).] In a charging machine for ingot or like heating furnaces, of the kind comprising a motor-driven truck 2 on which is pivotally mounted a peel 17 carrying grippers 24 operated by an hydraulic cylinder 23, the conduits 71, 72 supplying fluid to the cylinder 23 have swivel connections 70, 73 arranged coaxially with the pivotal shaft 16 of the peel. The truck 2, which has a pair of front wheels 3 and a single driving and steering wheel 10 at the rear, carries a self-contained hydraulic system for operating the cylinder 23 and a peel-tilting cylinder 21, this system comprising a rotary pump 32, driven by a motor 28, valves 45, 47 for controlling the fluid supply to the cylinders 21, 23, and a reservoir 42 for the fluid, e.g. oil. The valves 45, 47, which are identical, are of the double-piston type so that, when set to the neutral position shown in Fig. 4, fluid is trapped in the central part of the bore 48 and the tongs 24 and peel 17 are locked against movement in either direction. To ensure that the grip of the tongs 24 is not relaxed by leakage past the piston in the cylinder 23, the latter is connected at its rear end to a compensating cylinder 76 co-operating with springs 78 which are compressed when fluid is supplied to close the tongs and serve to deliver a make-up supply to the cylinder 23 while the tongs are maintained in the gripping position. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also a clay gun for plugging blast furnace tapping-holes comprising, as shown in Fig. 7 (Cancelled), superposed gun and reservoir chambers 81, 88 which communicate through a port 89 and are fitted with pistons 83, 90 actuated by hydraulic cylinders 86, 93. A self-contained hydraulic system, similar to that employed in connection with the furnace charging machine, is described for operating the cylinders 86, 93. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
