PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an efficient solid-state light emitting device in which phosphors excited by radiation produce visible light.SOLUTION: The efficiency is increased by, for example, providing a reflector adjacent to a phosphor layer for reflecting at least some of radiation that passes through the phosphor, back into the phosphor. The reflector also reflects at least some of visible light emitted by the phosphor, and directs it toward a designated light output. Alternatively or additionally, lateral edges of an active region of a radiation source can be at least partially surrounded by a visible light emitting phosphor and a reflector. This allows the radiation to interact further and excites the phosphor material, further increasing the efficiency of the device. The reflector also may reduce optical and radiation cross talk between adjacent light emitting devices. |
