The method involves changing a fuel cell system (1) between a normal operation and a regeneration operation for regeneration of a desulfurization device (24). The fuel cell system is changed to the regeneration operation when desulfurization power of the desulfurization device falls below a given threshold value and/or when a desulfurization catalytic converter (25) of the desulfurization device reaches a predetermined saturation power limit. A reformer (14) is operated in a reformer operation for generating reformate gas during normal operation. An independent claim is also included for a fuel cell system.
