An injection device which, having dispensed the contents of a syringe, automatically retracts a needle of the syringe. The device includes a drive coupling for extending from a drive element to a dispensing portion of the syringe so as to transfer movement of the drive element to a dispensing piston. The drive coupling element is compressible in length such that, after the drive element has moved the dispensing piston to an end surface of a housing, the drive coupling gradually reduces in length whilst the dispensing piston is maintained at the end surface until a mechanism releases the syringe.
