The method involves calculating a verification code (10) based on read personal data e.g. name, date of birth and birthplace, in an identification document (4) using an algorithm in a verification device (8) to detect a fake identification document. The verification code is formed from four characters and electronically transmitted to a computer terminal (6), and another verification code is calculated using the algorithm. The personal data are transmitted to a database server in accordance with both the verification codes.
