A rigid polyurethane foam includes the reaction product of a resin composition and an isocyanate composition. The resin composition includes a novolac polyol that has a general chemical structure (I). In this structure, R is an alkyl or alkylene group and the novolac polyol has an average hydroxyl functionality of from 2 to 30 calculated by dividing the weight average molecular weight of the novolac polyol by the equivalent weight of the novolac polyol. The novolac polyol is present in an amount of from 3 to 65 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the resin composition.
