EPSP synthase enzyme domains having a Q-loop conferring glyphosate resistance

Disclosed is an isolated or recombinant polynucleotide that encodes an 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate (EPSP) synthase polypeptide having a Q-loop, wherein said Q-loop has the sequence domain K-L-K-X1-S-A where X1 denotes a glycine and said polypeptide is resistant to glyphosate and said polypeptide is operably linked to a promoter that drives expression of the polypeptide in a plant cell. Also disclosed are methods of producing genetically transformed plants which are tolerant toward glyphosate herbicide, glyphosate tolerant plant cells, glyphosate tolerant plants and transformed seeds.
