PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for monitoring the sliding state of a piston ring of a diesel engine, that can grasp the sliding state of the piston ring with respect to a cylinder liner continuously and correctly including when the engine is operated so that a maintenance timing can be informed and, when an abnormal condition is found, a cause thereof can be specified and a countermeasure against the abnormal condition can be executed at an early stage. SOLUTION: A plurality of measurement values relating to a sliding state of a piston ring of a diesel engine 10 are stored in a memory range of a computer 20 by online inputs or manual inputs, and a state determination relating to the sliding state of the piston ring is performed for every measurement value stored in the memory range of the computer 20 so that a comprehensive state index is calculated. Based on the state index, timing when maintenance is required is estimated as well as, when the abnormal condition is found, a cause of the abnormal condition is specified, and a method for coping with the abnormal condition is extracted. While the information is informed to an operator, a control signal in accordance with the coping method is outputted from a control device 30 of the diesel engine 10 to the diesel engine 10.
