PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the control precision on the molten metal surface level of the molten steel in a mold by a simple modification in a range where trouble is reduced on the operation in which loss by the operational stop and equipment investment expense or the like are synthetically decided. SOLUTION: In the method for controlling the molten metal surface level of a molten steel in a mold upon continuous casting, which electrically directly controls the positional control of the spool in a working valve of a hydraulic cylinder device for regulating the opening degree of the sliding nozzle for regulating the flowing out rate pouring the molten steel in the tundish into the mold, the positional control of a spool in an operational valve is electrically direct-controlled. Further, from a difference between the measured value of the molten metal surface level and the target standard molten metal surface level value, the delay of a control system is measured to the time change, thus the optimum control gain is calculated. It has an effect of improving the control precision of the molten metal surface level of the molten steel in the mold by improving the response of a hydraulic cylinder device for regulating the opening degree of the sliding nozzle without remarkably modifying the existing molten metal surface level control system.
