In a bed comprising a two part mattress frame, the part 16 being hinged to the part 15 to form a back rest for the occupant of the bed, screw and nut means 27 operated by a crank 30 are provided for moving the part 15 of the mattress frame along the bed frame 10 in a plane fixed relatively to the bed frame and the back rest 16 is provided with link 21 which is pivoted at one end at 22 to the back rest 16 and at the other end to pivot carried by a lug 23 on the bed frame, so that sliding movement of the mattress frame results in the back rest part 16 being swung at an angle to the rest of the mattress frame. The part 15 of the mattress frame provided with tracks 18 to receive rollers 19 carried by the bed frame.
