<p>A method of encoding an image block. The method comprises: performing a Discrete Cosine Transform on the image block to produce a set of DCT coefficients; selecting a subset of the coefficients according to a pattern chosen from a plurality of predetermined patterns, the choice of pattern depending upon the content of the image block; and retaining the selected subset of coefficients and discarding all other coefficients.</p> |
