摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the rotation resistance and improve the discharging performance of operating fluid in a friction engagement element. <P>SOLUTION: In a friction material (a segment member 32b1), a first fixing surface groove 80 is formed in a radial direction so as to penetrate the outer peripheral surface side and the inner peripheral surface side in an adhesion surface with a core plate 32a, and a second fixing surface groove 84 is formed in a circumferential direction so as to communicate the first fixing surface groove 80 with a gap 82a, so that a part of an operating fluid flowing through the gap 82a is allowed to flow to the outer peripheral side through the second fixing surface groove 84 and the first fixing surface groove 80. Thereby, the discharging performance of the operating fluid is further improved. This configuration reduces an amount of the operating fluid hit against a wall surface (a side face of the segment member 32b1) of the gap 82a in the circumferential direction to reduce an agitating resistance, and reduces a viscous resistance due to a reduction in the amount of the operating fluid overflowing from the gap 82a to the segment member 32b1 surface.
