In a natural uranium nuclear reactor fuel element charging and discharging system, the vertical fuel channels in the graphite moderator are served by fuel handling devices which pass downwards through the shield and which are each rotatable so as to be capable of dealing with the channels enclosed in a circle having a radius equal to #10 times the pitch of the channels. The fuel handling devices are spaced apart at the apices of isosceles triangles having bases equal to six times the pitch and sides equal to #45 times the pitch. The channels situated between the circular areas house the control means. As shown, Fig. 1, the fixed charging tube 4a and movable charging tube 4b are accommodated by the charging duct 3a in the shield 1, 2. The control member 5 passes through the control duct 3b, In the plan of the reactor, graphite moderator, 6, Fig. 2, the moderator rods are lodged in the channels 7a and the fuel rods in the remaining channels within circles 8a of maximum radial sweep of tubes 4b. |
