A method and system for authenticating a gaming device having components is disclosed. One of the components of the gaming device is a persistent storage device. The method comprises starting up the gaming device, authenticating a data file stored on the persistent storage device, reading an identification number of one or more components of the gaming device, and authenticating each identification number. A method for authenticating a gaming device containing one or more data sets is also disclosed. The method comprises authenticating a data file stored on the persistent storage device, retrieving a first abbreviated bit string computed from each data set from a database; computing a second abbreviated bit string from each of the one or more data sets; and authenticating each data set by authenticating the second abbreviated bit string computed from the data set using the first abbreviated bit string. The authenticating of the data file is performed after starting up the gaming device, and prior to loading and authenticating an operating system of the gaming device.
