PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutting insert and an insert detachable cutting tool which has recesses formed in respective end faces thereof for ensuring the mounting strength and stability thereof, without damaging the rigidity and strength of cutting edge portions, and does not damage the seating stability thereof when the cutting edge portions for use in cutting are exchanged for new ones. SOLUTION: According to the structure of the cutting insert, a bottom surface extending in a longitudinal direction of a shaft-shaped insert main body 1 serves as a seating surface 8, and the pair of cutting edge portions 2 each having a cutting edge 4 with a raking face 5 that faces a side opposite to the seating surface 8, are formed at both longitudinal ends of the insert. A recess 12 is formed in each end face 11 facing in a longitudinal direction of the cutting edge portion 2, at a location on the seating surface 8 rather than a flank 9 of the cutting edge 4 such that a cross section in parallel with the raking face 5 is dented like the V shape in the longitudinal direction and that a dent volume and an opening width in the end face 11 are progressively increased in a location closer to the seating surface 8.
