<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of decoloring phenylene ether oligomers used for engineering plastics and the like and to provide the decolored phenylene ether oligomers obtained by using the decoloring method. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The decoloring method of the phenylene ether oligomers is characterized by reacting phenylene ether oligomer with a metal hydride. The decolored phenylene ether oligomers obtained by using the above decoloring method are also provided. The above phenylene ether oligomers are ones represented, for example, by formula (1) (wherein m and n are each an integer and m+n is 2-30) and the above metal hydride is for example sodium borohydride.
