The device has a lower drawing roller (3) i.e. downgate roller, and upper drawing rollers (12l, 12r) arranged at an inlet of a former (1). The rollers limit a gap (19) passing through from a strand i.e. paper web (21a) to be folded, where the gap is limited on a side by the rollers (12l, 12r) that are rotationally driven around shafts (13l, 13r). The rollers (12l, 12r) that are adjustable against each other lie on different sides of a plane, which is perpendicular to the shafts and runs through an output-side point of the former. The rollers (12l, 12r) are designed as sandwich rollers.
