PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an elevator car holding device capable of stopping, in a short time, lifting caused by the self-traveling of a car during the maintenance work of an elevator. SOLUTION: The elevator car holding device is provided with a base 17 forming a wedge space 19 between the base 17 and a car guide rail 13a; a wedge block 32 arranged so as to be movable between a car movement permitting position and a car lifting regulating position; a movable iron plate 25 arranged so as to be movable between a first position to locate the wedge block 32 in the car movement permitting position and a second position to locate the wedge block 32 in the car lifting regulating position; a first coil spring 30a for holding the movable iron plate 25 in the first position; a first electromagnet 22 for generating an electromagnetic force to hold the movable iron plate 25 in the second position; a speed information providing mechanism 40 for transmitting first and second speed information data corresponding to the movement speed of the car 4; and an elevator control board for supplying an electric current to the first electromagnet 22 when it is determined that a predetermined set value or lower of the movement speed of the lifting car 4 is continued for a predetermined time.
