PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve damping performance by generating a certain friction force between a sliding plate and a friction member. SOLUTION: The friction damper comprises sliding plates 4 fixed to both sides of a first steel plate 2; second steel plates 3 disposed to be superimposed on the sliding plates 4; the friction member 5 fixed to each second steel plate 3 and disposed slidably disposed to the sliding plate 4; a fastening bolt 11 penetrating the first steel plate 2, second steel plate 3, sliding plate 4, and friction member 5; a bolt side washer 12 provided on the fastening bolt 11; and a plate spring 15 interposed between the bolt side washer 12 and second steel plate 3A, and disposed coaxially with the fastening bolt 11. Between the bolt side washer 12 and the second steel plate 3A, a retaining member 16 in contact with a diameter direction outer peripheral portion 15b of the plate spring 15 and regulating the movement of the plate spring 15 in a direction orthogonal to an axial direction of the fastening bolt 11.
