A lamp stand has arm sections each comprising a square-section tube 1 having at its ends joint members 5 180 degrees out of alignment and in the tube a spring 3 housing a square-section inner tube 2 of smaller cross-section, two or three turns of the spring of smaller cross-section gripping the tube. Each member 5 has a guide sleeve 6 with a square-section inner bore engaging tube 2 and a bevel-gear 6<SP>1</SP> in engagement with a double bevel pinion 7 clamped between the joint members by a pin 8 so that when an angular adjustment of an arm section is made tube 2 is rotated thus tensioning the spring 3, the friction between the abutting surfaces of members 5 and pinion 7 preventing return of the arm section. |
