PURPOSE:To obtain the titled magnetic recording medium for horizontal recording having excellent magnetic characteristics and corrosion resistance by forming a substrate layer and a magnetic layer on a discoid substrate, specifying the contents of Cr, noble metal and Co in a magnetic film and specifying the diameter of the crystal grain and crystal system. CONSTITUTION:The discoid substrate formed on a substrate layer is kept from room temp. to 300 deg.C and a thin film contg. nitrogen is formed by using an alloy target having nearly the same composition as the final product. The nitrogen contained in the thin film is liberated by heating the thin film to obtain a magnetic thin film contg. 3-20at% Cr, 3-15at% noble metal and the remainder consisting essentially of >=75at% Co, consisting essentially of crystal grains having 100-500Angstrom grain diameter, whose C-axis is mostly in the plane and having substantially a h.c.p. crystal structure. The noble metals such as Pt, Rh, Rn, Re, Pd and Ir are added to moderate the effect of added Cr in reducing the magnetization 4piMs and simultaneously to improve the corrosion resistance.
