PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a relatively inexpensive oil level adjusting device 20 for properly adjusting the level of the oil surface of operating oil in an automatic transmission 2 as required. SOLUTION: The oil level adjusting device comprises a catch tank 21 for receiving operating oil from the automatic transmission 2, a recirculation path 22 for returning the operating oil from the catch tank 21 to the automatic transmission 2, and a changeover valve 23 installed in the midway of the recirculation path 22. Receiving signal pressure P<SB>c2</SB>outputted when establishing a high shift stage with a range changeover hydraulic control circuit 7 of the automatic transmission 2, the changeover valve 23 closes the recirculation path 22. When the high shift stage is selected in this way, the operating oil cannot be returned from the catch tank 21 to the automatic transmission 2, therefore reducing the level of the oil surface in the automatic transmission 2.
