PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce noise and obtain high-quality images while preserving an edge of an input image.

SOLUTION: An edge stress filter 14 subjects an input image to edge stress processing. An anisotropic diffusion processing filter 15 subjects the image after edge stress processing to smoothing treatment that differs depending on the direction of an edge in the image. In other words, strong smoothing is performed for a direction parallel with the edge, whereas weak smoothing is performed for a direction vertical with the edge.
