PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device capable of easily judging kinds of discharge lamps mounted, and lighting itself watt-free even in case a discharge lamp with a different rated power output is mounted. SOLUTION: A control part 21 drives and controls an inverter circuit 14 in a state with mounting of a discharge lamp 16 detected by a mounting detection circuit 19 to control lighting of the discharge lamp 16. Then, an output of the inverter circuit 14 is controlled so as to be at a rated power output of the discharge lamp 16, based on the kind of the discharge lamp 16 judged by a discharge lamp judgment circuit 23.
