<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact illumination device which can suppresses the degradation in light use efficiency, and to provide an image display apparatus using the illumination device. <P>SOLUTION: The illumination device comprises: a first light source 2a having a plurality of light emission devices; a second light source 2b which has a plurality of light emission devices and is arranged such that an optical axis thereof intersects an optical axis of the first light source 2a; a rotation member 3 which has a rotation center arranged on a position where the optical axis of the first light source 2a and the optical axis of the second light source 2b intersect each other and is provided with a light transmission region and a light reflection region; a first light guide part 4a which guides light emitted from the first light source 2a to the rotation member 3; a second light guide part 4b which guides light emitted from the second light source 2b to the rotation member 3; and a control device 5 which intermittently turns on the light emission devices of the first light source 2a and the light emission devices of the second light source 2b respectively, wherein the light of the first light source 2a is transmitted by the light transmission region of the rotation member 3 and the light of the second light source 2b is reflected by the light reflection region of the rotation member 3 and is emitted to a common optical path. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
